Interviews today are more than just Q&A sessions. They're branding exercises, alignment checks, and trust tests—all compressed into short conversations, often over video.
Having worked across AI, gaming, venture-backed tech, and operations-heavy industries, I’ve seen what separates high-performing candidates from those who blend in. Below are seven modern truths of interviewing—each with insight, impact, and actionable tactics to help you win.

1. Interviews Start Before You Ever Speak
Why this matters: Interviewers often form opinions before the conversation begins. They Google you. They check your LinkedIn. They read your posts. If your digital footprint doesn’t tell a compelling, aligned story, you’ve already lost ground.
What it tells the interviewer: You understand how to manage your brand and reputation, which is especially important in leadership, client-facing, or public roles.
Tips:
🔹 Craft a LinkedIn headline that shows your value, not just your job title.
🔹 Prune outdated or irrelevant content across platforms.
🔹 Google yourself—see what your interviewer might see and align accordingly.
I’d Avoid the “Easy Apply” Trap!
Why it matters: The “Easy Apply” button feels fast—but it’s the hiring version of spraying bullets in the dark. When you aim at everyone, you hit no one. Top candidates aim small, miss small—because specificity signals intent, and intent builds trust.
What it tells the interviewer: You didn’t take the time to understand the company, the role, or the challenge. You’re hoping to be chosen—not showing why you’re the obvious choice.
If I were interviewing:
🔹 I’d skip Easy Apply and target roles where I can directly map my value
🔹 I’d craft tailored outreach to hiring managers or team leads with a specific POV
🔹 I’d focus on fewer, higher-impact applications—each one personalized, intentional, and memorable
3. AI Is the New Gatekeeper
Why this matters: Most résumés are screened by software before a human even sees them. If your résumé isn’t machine-readable or keyword-aligned, you might be filtered out—regardless of how qualified you are.
What it tells the interviewer: You’re detail-oriented, you understand modern hiring workflows, and you can follow instructions—traits every team needs.
Tips:
🔹 Use exact phrasing from the job posting to align with ATS algorithms.
🔹 Keep formatting clean: no fancy columns, tables, or graphics.
🔹 Quantify your impact—metrics grab attention and signal credibility.
4. Remote Is Normal, But Not Neutral
Why this matters: Video interviews flatten nuance. You can’t rely on body language, office presence, or casual rapport to carry the day. You must bring clarity, energy, and intentionality to every call.
What it tells the interviewer: You can communicate effectively across remote or hybrid teams—a critical skill in today’s global, distributed workforce.
Tips:
🔹 Look into the camera, not the screen—this mimics eye contact.
🔹 Structure your thoughts into short, story-driven responses.
🔹 Follow up with a personalized message or Loom recap to reinforce interest.
5. Great Candidates Ask Great Questions
Why this matters: Strong questions signal curiosity, preparation, and strategic thinking. Interviews aren’t just about being evaluated—they’re about demonstrating that you know how to evaluate opportunity.
What it tells the interviewer: You’re not just looking for any job—you’re looking for the right role. You think long-term and understand business context.
Tips:
🔹 Ask about impact: “What would make the first 90 days a success?”
🔹 Ask about challenges: “What’s blocking momentum on this team?”
🔹 Ask about growth: “How do you see this role evolving in 12–18 months?”
6. Explore Adjacent Industries
Why this matters: The job market is fluid. Many of today’s most successful candidates are pivoting into new sectors where their skills matter more than their past titles.
What it tells the interviewer: You’re adaptable, a fast learner, and capable of applying lessons across different business contexts—hallmarks of strategic hires.
Tips:
🔹 Research 2–3 adjacent verticals where your work solves similar problems.
🔹 Learn the pain points, language, and business models of those sectors.
🔹 In interviews, draw parallels: “Here’s how my experience in [X] maps to your challenge in [Y].”
7. Be Honest: Is This Industry Right for You Right Now?
Why this matters: Sometimes the biggest unlock comes from letting go. If you’ve been chasing an industry that isn’t returning the energy, it may not be the right fit right now—and that realization can open new, better-aligned doors.
What it tells the interviewer: You’re self-aware. You’ve done the internal work. You’re not here out of desperation—you’re here because you’re ready to deliver.
Tips:
🔹 Reflect on what energizes you—not just what you’ve done before.
🔹 Speak with professionals who’ve made pivots—what did they learn?
🔹 Be open to transitional roles that offer leverage, clarity, or lifestyle alignment.
8. Culture Fit Is Real—But Culture Add Is What Gets You Hired
Why this matters: Companies don’t want clones. They want contributors—people who bring energy, values, and fresh ideas that make the team better.
What it tells the interviewer: You’re thoughtful, emotionally intelligent, and likely to stick around—not just because you fit in, but because you’ll help them evolve.
Tips:
🔹 Share how your values align with the company’s mission or leadership style.
🔹 Be honest about what kind of environment helps you thrive.
🔹 Talk about real moments of challenge or failure—and how you grew.
Final Thought: Modern Interviews Are About Strategy!
In today’s job market, every interview is an opportunity to align—not just impress.
The best candidates don’t try to be perfect. They show up prepared, curious, and honest about what they want and what they can offer.
If you’re interviewing right now—or thinking about it.
