China’s Global Chokehold on Rare Earths

Over the last two decades, China has secured over 80–90% of the rare earth processing market. And they did it by playing the long game—subsidizing domestic production, tolerating environmental degradation, and acquiring foreign mining rights with strategic patience.


Meanwhile, the U.S. shuttered most of its rare earth infrastructure due to high costs and environmental concerns. Today, even when rare earths are mined domestically (e.g., at Mountain Pass in California), they’re often shipped to China for refinement—an ironic and dangerous bottleneck.


This gives Beijing an undeniable leverage point over global supply chains, and they’ve shown a willingness to weaponize it during geopolitical tensions.

What the U.S. Must Do—Now

It’s time to treat rare earth independence the way we treat energy, water, and cybersecurity: as non-negotiable infrastructure for a secure and sovereign future.


That means:

  • Investing in U.S.-based mining and processing operations

  • Subsidizing clean, efficient refinement technologies

  • Creating public-private partnerships to de-risk investment

  • Streamlining permitting processes without compromising safety

  • Stockpiling strategic reserves of rare earths and critical minerals
